Opera - Turandot

Date

October 2023

Role

Designer and maker

Project type

Half scale mannequin

I was tasked with creating a conceptualised interpretation of ‘Turandot’. Having read excerpts of the libretto, I decided to set the opera within a fractured botanical glasshouse, representing her kingdom. This botanical theme would then be inspired by the harsh and toxic nature of poisonous plants and how they defend themselves, which I felt aligned with Turandot’s character and her desire to honour her ancestor to ensure she does not suffer the same fate.

Through my design process I chose to represent Turandot’s costume as a Dragon Arum Lily, a poisonous plant that also has medicinal properties.

My research also led me to explore the symbolism of moths within Chinese culture, whereby spirits of the deceased are believed to return in the form of moths. I chose to echo this within Turandot’s costume, as she believes she is her ancestor reborn; eternally connected.

Costume experimental elements:
Heat gun experiments
Needle Felting moth print
Pleating and draping
Wire hem work
